Earthbound Background Warper

Happy New Year!

Here's making good on my 2021 resolution to build a reference catalogue of interesting software. These are aspects of prior projects I've been involved in, or ideas that have captured my imagination and are intended to be included in future projects.

For the past few days I've been familiarising myself with the Godot engine and checking out what features are present. It's been a little difficult as I'm fostering kittens from my local pound and all 6 of them + their mum want to lay on my keyboard... I have no idea how they keep pulling off the key combo to shut down my computer, but I will say: they're lucky they're cute.

Initially I just wanted to scroll a repeating background image on the menu of a separate catalogue item, but as soon as I finished the fragment shader I knew I needed to put it in new a dedicated project to explore further. I found some interesting information on how Earthbound did their battle background effects and decided to use that as a starting point for exploring distortion effects.

Currently I'm controlling the warp effects through sliders I put in the Godot Inspector panel, but once I've got most of the effects in I'll put in some adjustment menus (Earthbound themed of course) and open the project up publicly.  As I don't have a licence for the background graphics I may have to replace them if I get a cease-and-desist, but current/productive me needs to just leave that to future me and not spend the rest of the year producing graphics.
